The Blue Mosque, officially known as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii), is a stunning architectural masterpiece located in the heart of Istanbul's historic Sultanahmet district. Renowned for its six minarets and over 20,000 blue Iznik tiles that adorn its interior, it remains an active place of worship and a major tourist attraction.
Visiting Information
Location: The mosque is situated in the Sultanahmet district of Istanbul, Turkey, on the site of the former Byzantine Hippodrome, directly across from the Hagia Sophia.
Opening Hours: It is open daily from approximately 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM, but is closed to visitors for around 90 minutes during the five daily prayer times. On Fridays, it is closed until after the noon prayer (around 2:30 PM).
Entrance Fee: Entry to the Blue Mosque is free of charge. Donations are accepted at the exit for its upkeep.
Dress Code: A modest dress code is required out of respect for the active place of worship.
Shoulders and knees must be covered for all visitors.
Women must also wear a head covering (scarves are provided free of charge at the entrance).
Shoes must be removed before entering the carpeted area of the mosque; plastic bags are provided for carrying them.
Accessibility: The mosque is largely wheelchair accessible, with a ramp available at the southern entrance.
Transportation: The easiest way to reach the mosque is via the T1 tram line to the Sultanahmet stop, which is a short walk away.
