The House-Museum of Avetik Isahakyan

The House-Museum of Avetik Isahakyan is a prominent cultural institution located on Zarobyan Street in Yerevan. The museum is dedicated to preserving the legacy, personal history, and literary contributions of Avetik Isahakyan (1875–1957), one of the most significant Armenian lyric poets and intellectuals of the 20th century.

🏛️ History and Architecture

The building itself was a gift from the Armenian government to the poet in 1945 to mark his 70th anniversary. Constructed out of polished black tuff stone and designed by architect Perchanush Msryan according to Isahakyan's personal preferences, the structure features a distinct rectangular layout with architectural elements reminiscent of a traditional Armenian chapel. Isahakyan resided in this house with his family for the final decade of his life, from 1946 until his passing in 1957. By government decree, the residence was subsequently converted into a memorial museum and officially opened to the public on October 31, 1963.

📚 The Permanent Exhibition

The museum collection comprises over 10,000 items, including original manuscripts, official documents, photographs, letters, and the author's extensive personal library. The exhibition space is systematically divided into two primary sections:

• The Memorial Section: Located on the first floor, this area preserves the original domestic interior exactly as it was during the poet's lifetime. Visitors can view his personal study—complete with his vintage writing desk and custom-built sofa—as well as the master bedroom and the main living room, which historically served as a meeting place for the contemporary Armenian intelligentsia. The walls of the living room feature original artwork gifted to the poet by renowned artists, including Martiros Saryan and Panos Terlemezyan.

• The Literary Section: This segment chronicles Isahakyan’s biographical timeline and creative development, highlighting the global translation and impact of his literary works.

📍 Visitor and Structural Information

The property seamlessly extends into a formal courtyard and garden area, which houses a bronze bust of the writer sculpted by Nikoghos Nikoghosyan and a monumental tuff relief by Norayr Karganyan. The museum operates as a research and educational center under the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia, regularly hosting scientific readings, literary presentations, and historical lectures.
